Delivering an enhanced user interface

Release 7.0

Our goal is to continually improve the my.monash experience; delivering a consistent, effective experience and design that works across platforms and devices. One of the ways we do this is to be responsive to user feedback.

We recently invited all students and staff to vote on their preferred interface from three options. We received over 3,000 votes. And today, we’re launching a new interface which delivers a:
  • Clean, minimalist design with an air of simplicity that promotes clarity of form, function and message.
  • Concise and clear visual communication, user-centric functionality and ease of navigation supporting effective interactions with our services and systems.

Tile colours

Again, based on your feedback, and in alignment with the Monash brand and web accessibility guidelines, we’ve categorised  the tile colours as follows:
  • Blue – core admin functions related to productivity
  • Purple – study and academic materials
  • Green – campus related experiences
  • Pink – support services or professional development related
  • Red/Orange – announcements, notices and news
We’ve grouped together tiles of the same colour and ordered them alphabetically. The exception, are the five most used tiles which appear at the top.

Action-orientated format

You’ll also notice that we’ve made some changes to the second level menus. Based on analytics and user focus group feedback, we've rationalised the links and made them action-orientated. For example, I want to… Find a computer lab.

Tile changes

Depending on your view (student or staff), you’ll notice some tile changes:
  • Bookings (AU staff only) – moved to Campus Life tile.
  • Campus Life / On Campus – consolidated tile created for students and staff.
  • Expenses & purchasing – shop.monash and M-Pass moved to Campus Life.
  • Google Apps – removed as the most frequently used apps already have their own tiles.
  • Google Drive – new to staff.
  • Help (AU staff only) – removed and content moved to other more meaningful tiles.
  • IT Support – replaces IT Service Announcements and now includes a few other IT related links.
  • Lectures online – removed as these can now be accessed directly in Moodle.
  • M-Safe – added to desktop view.
  • Research – Research services and Research Storage Options removed upon request from business area.
  • Search – removed. Users expressed confusion over it and the internal my.monash search.
  • Staff Directory – added to desktop view.
  • Teaching & learning – Locate a computer lab moved Campus Life tile.
  • Tools – replaces Service Admin Tools, and now includes building maintenance work requests.
  • Welcome tile – removed for AU only to free up space for an upcoming dashboard.

If you'd like to provide feedback on the new user interface, please use the feedback bubble in my.monash.

Library hold notifications in my.monash

Release 6.0

From this week onward Australian students and staff will receive alerts when your library hold request is ready for pick-up. If you’ve downloaded the mobile App, you’ll get a notification on your phone.

Students, you'll also see an 'Alerts' tile on your desktop, with a badge showing the number of unread alerts. If you started this semester, you will have already been receiving alerts. Now that the tile is visible to all students, we’ll start to use this channel to send alerts to all students about activities coming up in the student calendar.
